Dragons are an intrinsic part of Greek tradition. In ancient mythology, Ladon was the sleepless guardian of the golden apples in the Garden of the Hesperides, killed by Hercules with a bow and arrow. In the Byzantine era, they appear in Acritic songs, where heroes like Digenes Akritas clash with them in epic battles. In Christian tradition, the dragon becomes a symbol of evil, defeated by Saint George. In the lore of the Greek countryside and islands, dragon caves are spoken of as dwellings of something ancient, something that has never quite left.
